Minimum Tank Size: | 120 gallons |

The Zebrasoma scopas is famous for its color, shape and propensity to eat nuisance hair algae in the aquarium. It exhibits a long snout that enables the Zebrasoma tangs to reach filamentous algae in the aquarium which are out of reach for other Acanthurids and surgeonfish. The Juvenile Scopas Tang is solitary and never stays far from the cover of reef, whereas, the adult roams in the reef tank and can be found in pair, singly, or in large groups. The juvenile Scopas Tang show somewhat different body marking than that of adult ones with exaggerated dorsal and anal fins as well as thin white vertical lines that transverse the body. The Scopas Tang is easy to keep and care, especially in a reef aquarium. The Scopas Tang should be fed with freeze-dried algae sheet with a lettuce clip so it can browse throughout the day. Other food include substantial amount of plant material; including microalgae, broccoli, spinach, Spirulina flake food and dried algae sheets for a continued good health. The Scopas Tang is an aggressive fish towards other similar shaped fish, especially surgeonfish. It can be kept in groups or in pairs only in a large aquarium. The Scopas Tang is sexually dimorphic, with males having a patch of short, bristles on the caudal peduncle, which is not present in females.
Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas) Care Guide
If you're a passionate marine aquarium enthusiast seeking a striking and dynamic addition to your underwater world, the Scopas Tang, scientifically known as Zebrasoma scopas, might be the perfect choice. This comprehensive care guide provides essential information on this species, from its natural habitat to dietary requirements, tank conditions, compatibility, and why you should consider acquiring it from Saltwaterfish.com.
Habitat of the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang is commonly found in the warm, tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its natural habitat includes coral reefs, lagoons, and rocky outcrops, where it can graze on algae and find shelter in the reef's crevices.
Reef Compatibility of the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang is generally considered reef-safe. However, it's essential to monitor their diet, as they are herbivorous and primarily feed on various species of algae. Ensuring a steady supply of algae in the aquarium will keep them content and less likely to nibble on coral or other sessile invertebrates.
Size and Lifespan of the Scopas Tang:
This species can grow to a maximum size of approximately 12 inches (30 cm). They can have a lifespan of 7-10 years with proper care and a suitable environment.
Diet in Captivity for the Scopas Tang:
In captivity, the Scopas Tang's diet should primarily consist of marine algae and seaweed. High-quality marine algae sheets and pellets are ideal for meeting their nutritional needs. Providing a variety of fresh or frozen foods, such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, can offer essential nutrients and maintain their overall health.
Aquaculture and Availability of the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang is occasionally available to hobbyists through aquaculture. This sustainable breeding method ensures the adaptability and health of these tangs, making them an excellent choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts. Saltwaterfish.com is committed to providing aquarists with aquacultured fish acclimating to captive conditions, aiding in maintaining a thriving aquarium. If aquacultured specimens are unavailable, choose a supplier with responsible collection methods.
Compatibility with Other Fish and Invertebrates for the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang is known for its generally peaceful temperament. However, like many tangs, they can become territorial with their own kind or other tang species. When introducing new tank mates, provide enough space and hiding spots to minimize potential conflicts. Peaceful or semi-aggressive tank mates with similar water parameter requirements can coexist well with the Scopas Tang.
Sexual Dimorphism in the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang does not exhibit sexual dimorphism, meaning that males and females share similar physical characteristics and coloration.
Juvenile to Adult Coloration Changes in the Scopas Tang:
Juvenile Scopas Tangs typically have a brownish body with a lighter belly and contrasting white markings. As they mature into adulthood, their coloration can become darker, with a distinctive brown body and bold white horizontal stripes along their sides.
Temperament of the Scopas Tang:
The Scopas Tang is generally peaceful, making it suitable for community aquariums. To reduce aggression, ensure your tank is spacious enough and provide hiding spots and territories for all inhabitants.
Tank Requirements for the Scopas Tang:
To ensure the well-being of your Scopas Tang's well-being, maintaining a tank with a minimum size of 120 gallons (approximately 420 liters) is essential. Proper water conditions are crucial for their health and longevity. Maintain a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025, and a stable temperature between 74-80°F (23-27°C). A well-functioning protein skimmer and adequate water flow are recommended to maintain water quality.
Common Names of the Scopas Tang:
Due to its distinctive coloration and pattern, the Scopas Tang may also be known as the Brown Scopas Tang or Twotone Tang.
