The Short Spine Urchin (Echinometra sp.), can be found among the reefs and rocky outcroppings of the Atlantic Ocean. They feed on algae, including the calcified coralline algae, along with other forms of seaweed. They typically hide throughout the day and scavenge the tank at night, in search of algae or detritus. They add character and interesting variety to a cleanup crew- just use caution when handling, as their spines can puncture skin. They should not be kept with fish that have beaks, such as puffers or triggers.
