The Spotlight Parrotfish (Scarus viride) inhabits shallow tropical reefs off the coast of Florida, Bermuda and the Caribbean. They have a vibrant green body with each scale having a purple/red outline, giving a beautiful cross-hatched design. They get their common name "Spotlight" from the yellow spot on their caudal fin, typically seen in terminal phase males. They typically feed on marine algae, but also eat corals, sponges and invertebrates. They require plenty of space to swim and should be offered a varied diet with occasional vitamins. They reach rarely exceed 18 inches in captivity, though they can reach lengths of 3+ feet in the wild. Juveniles may be shy and may hide among rocks or sea grass until they are comfortable with their surroundings.
